Hanukkah Money Cookies

It is tradition with Hanukah to give children gelt (money) for their accomplishments and for being good. You can create these fun gold wrapped traditional cookies in honor of this tradition.

Hanukkah Money CookiesWhat you will need:

1. Ingredients for Mandelbrot (recipe follows)
2. Gold foil cupcake cups or just gold foil
3. Tape
4. Various coins

Directions:

1. Begin by making and baking the Mandelbrot.
2. When the cookies have cooled and been cut put two cookies together to form a complete circle.
3. Wrap the two cookies in the gold foil.
4. Continue doing this until you run out of cookies.
5. Wrap a piece of tape around your finger so that the sticky part is outside.
6. Use the roll of tape to attach a coin to the foil around the cookies.
7. Place in a basket or bowl to be handed out to family members during the Hanukah festivities.

Mandelbrot

4 Cups Flour
4 Teaspoons Baking Powder
½ Teaspoon Salt
¾ Cup White Sugar
½ Vegetable Oil
3 eggs
½ Cup Orange Juice
2 Teaspoons Orange Zest
¾ Cup Chocolate Syrup
2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon

To Make:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar together. With mixer blend in eggs and 1/2 cup oil. Pour orange juice and orange zest into mixture; mix well. When the mixture becomes very thick continue stirring with a wooden spoon.

3. Separate dough into thirds. Roll each chunk of dough into a rectangular shape. Sprinkle the chocolate syrup onto the center of each rectangle. Fold the sides of each rectangle into the center to form a round loaf shape. Each roll should be about 12 inches long. Brush the outside of each roll lightly with oil. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top of the rolls.

4. Bake on a nonstick cookie pan for 20 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. When cookies have cooled cut the loaves to form semi-circle shaped cookies.
