Homemade Gifts for Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that lasts for eight days. This holiday celebrates the victory of the Macabees over their oppressors and the rededication of the temple. Also, there is the legend of the lamp oil that burned for eight days when there was only enough oil for one day. This miracle is symbolized by the lighting of the Menorah, a candleholder with eight candles symbolizing the eight days as well as an additional candle in the center. Gifts are traditionally given on each of the eight days of Hanukkah. Rather than going with store-bought gifts this this year, why not make your own? Here are some ideas:

Clay Dreidel

You can craft a traditional Hanuakkah dreidel out of clay, as the well-known song says! At your local arts and crafts supply store, you can find clay that's hardened by baking it in the oven. Before baking the clay, be sure to carve the traditional dreidel symbols on each side.

Hanukkah Placemats

Kids will love making a set of Hanukkah placemats. You can use dark blue and silver construction paper. Use a stencil and cut out the Star of David out of silver (or gray) paper. Then, glue your star onto the blue construction paper and allow the glue to dry. You can take your placemats to a photo or copy store and request lamination. There are also laminating kits at the craft store. Laminating your placemats will keep them clean and help them last longer.

Hanukkah Candle

It's easy to make your own candles! Simply buy some beeswax or parrafin from your local craft store. You can find wax for candlemaking in a variety of beautiful colors. Choose a candle mold and be sure to buy some wicks. Melt the candle wax in a double boiler, then pour about half of it into your mold. Add the wick and pour the remaining wax around it. Allow the wax to harden, then remove from the mold. If you like, you can scent the melted wax with essential oil or fragrance oil made for candles. You can even paint or carve the Star of David on the outside of the candle for a festive look.

Homemade Gift Basket

For a great Hanukkah gift basket, you'll need a variety of goodies. Try some scented soaps and candles, or a good mix of kosher food items like cheeses, cured meats, jams and jellies. Fill your basket with dark blue or silver confetti or shredded paper. Arrange your gift items attractively in the basket. Cover with blue cellophane and add a silver bow for the finishing touch!
